This is staggering off into  territory.
Arguments are well and good, but only productive if you cite your sources...
Come on Homer needs some bathroom reading material... cite some stuff for me.
Everything discussed seams plausible. But lets find out what they did.
Anyone have access to the company of mil hist. publication Todd's Vol 1 or 2 I don't remember that has dates and issuance of uniforms by company and type?

I agree with Homer, I just want to see the history. We don't know if they had knapsacks or not. Yes, they were green, but this was not their first rodeo. They had been placed with a veteran brigade during the long Perryville campaign, as were all green regiments by order of Buell. These veterans were making fun of the new regiments and what they carried, they also were stealing gear from them and leaving them their old crap. They would have been trying to impress them by trying to carry what they did, just to gain acceptance. A letter from the(see below) 15th O.V.I speaks of shelter tents at Murfreesboro and states when they were attacked they left their blankets and haversacks. I'll try and find a URL, I also ran across a letter written in a tent from a member of the 39th Indiana in November 1862. No luck on knapsacks yet. www.webspawner.com/users/15thovi/www.15thohio.4t.com/Boozie

Sorry, scroll down and click on '15th ohio vol. infantry' to get the first part of the story and the mention of shelter tents.

Gents, I want all of you to do me a favor. Sit back from your keyboards, take a deep breath and relax. This hobby has people getting soooo anal prior to the event with debating each other about this bullshit and that bullshit, that when it comes to the event hardly anybody does what theyre supposed to do anyway. Then folks bitch, gee I didnt have as good a time as they promised. Well listen, I want ALL of you to have a extremely authentic experience. That said to do this I AM GOING TO NEED EVERBODYS COOPERATION! From the lowliest private to the company commanders. To pull off an event of this scope takes coordination, cooperation and harmony between participants. We do not want tension between anyone or it will not gel. Am I making myself clear? I told Tim it is up to the CO for carrying packs or rolls. That was my decision. Did I do it because of historical documentation? No. I did it because events no matter what you say to wear or bring will always have folks doing something different. At BGR we had guidlines for uniforms. Were they followed? No. Neither were they at Shiloh or Vicksburg. Is it okay to not follow them? No it is not but if I can uniformally get you guys (all the companies) to be about 75% uniform I will be very happy. I give a shit about packs or rolls myself, I just thought my idea was kinda cool thats all. Many say I think outside the box. I sort of like that. If you have a roll when everyone else has a pack am I going to be pissed? Hell No! If I walk by at the event and I hear anyone talking kit, events, sports or anything modern I will chew you a new asshole though. Lets worry about our first person and our ability to be soldiers for the time period we are talking about then petty bullshit. Well thats it for me my fingers are tired. If anyone wants to talk to the CO. give me a ring at 608-293-0585. Im very user friendly. Cheers Terry Sorchy

I apologize for my arguing but sometimes I get quite worked up about nothing, seemingly. I will do my best to research the issue at hand, but that being said I still believe that it is more prudent to have what is issued than to not in such a case where I don't find what was happening. I'm making an appointment at the CHM and I'll see what I can find, if not, I'll go over to the National Archives in Chicago.

Boozie, You were behind the cheddar curtain and didnt let me know! That just aint right. You could have come over and had brats and beer. Its weird though, I talk to so many guys in our type of insanity that tell me Oh I have family in Wis. or I was there on business. Now when I ask you to come to an event here, will you come? Cheers Terry

Sorry, my dance card was full of drinking and eating. The reps from Pierce took us to eat at Vince Lombardi's and they have a firefighter bar in the hotel. Can you believe they thought I talked funny up there?
Sorry to spoil the thread. So who makes the best knapsack!!!!!! ;D

No big deal Riley, at least on this board we all want to do our research and not only look good, but play the part right to. That is our common bond here. Boozie

No need to over analyze here. For those of you who don’t have time in service the learning curve is and was fast. Or you DIE! You learn from your superiors and vets with more time in and combat experience. I personally don’t feel common sense (in this case) needs to be documented. I will be carrying a bedroll. Because my commanding officer has said we will, I don’t have a knapsack, and I will be mobile enough to take any reb that wants some to the mat ;D.

Well I welcome a healthy discussion on uniforms acoutrements and the history of the 89th, and any illinois unit, aparently this is not an apealling topic here... but anyone that wants to entertain such a conversation, use the PM function... and we can key away and one another until we are blue in the face, squirting research on eachothers faces like a bukake' flic.
