Did you ever take a piece of history for gospel and then have an "OH SHIT" that aint right moment. For years I thought my GGG-Grandfather Z.H. Crane of the 10th Indiana was wounded at Mill Springs. Hell the 10th IND. reunion book says so. So i'm thinking that i'll get his pension records before the goverment "mail jacks us". I get the thing in the mail yesterday and " OH SHIT" thats not right at all. This is not family show and tell, but how could you miss this. Makes my "Frank and Beans" shrink to think of this happening.
Pension of Z.H. Crane
I Robert Willimson, do swear that I was Regt. Surgeon of the 10th Regt. of Indiana Vols. War of 1861. That at the battle of PERRVVILLE in the state of Kentucky on the 8th day of October 1862, while making a charge on the enemy, Zephaniah H. Crane, a private in Co. B of said 10th Regt. Ind. Vols. while in the service of the United States and in the line of his duty was injured in the left eye by being struck in the eye by a bush which was violenty jerked down by one of the men of said company, who had seized hold of the bush to aid himself in climbing a hill.
I treated him for said injuryv for only a few days and then sent him to general hospital. On account, and by reason of the injury above described said eye inflamed and the sight of said eye thereby was destroyed.
It also goes on to state that part of the face was deformed from the "wound". The guy was 42 at enlistment, transfered to the V.R.C. in 63, reenlisted in 64 and mustered out Nov. of 65. Talk about a "Hard Case"! His eye ball was sunken back in the socket and it matted and drained the rest of his life. SHIT!!
It's a piece off from taking a ball at Mill Springs.
