Where: Davies Plantation near Memphis, TN This site has the Davies Manor, which is the oldest house in Shelby County (built around 1820-1830). There are 3 additional cabins on the property, as well as a Commissary, and split-rail fences run throughout. Visit the website: daviesmanorplantation.org/What: Civilian-focused event with military interaction. The goal of this event is to portray a small community daily life. There will be some military involvement, primarily in the form of Federal troops and supply trains (if I can get ahold of some wagons, that is). There will be a small, carefully scripted scenario depicting the Confederate ambush of the Federal supply train at Morning Sun on June 30, 1862. Federal impression is 57th Ohio. Confederate is still being researched. That said, the emphasis of the event is the civilian aspect, with the military as an exciting side show. When: JUNE 15 - 17, 2012Many of the details are still being hashed out, but there are a few things that I would like to have to pull this thing off. Most importantly, and probably hardest to come by is wagons and teams. For the scenario to really work, I would like at least 2 supply wagons. Also, help with the uniforms and gear the 57th Ohio was in mid-62 would be greatly appreciated. Finally, I'd like to track down just which Confederate unit was involved at Morning Sun. I hope the Hard Case Boys will assist in this endeavor. Thank you.

I don't know why this is sticking in my head but I remember reading it was either Porter's or Jackson's Cavalry. I'll see if I can find where I read it.

Thanks Mike.
I'm trying to organize a walk-thru of the site in a week or two. It will include the Executive Director of Davies Manor, President of the Board of Directors, myself, and others I have brought on board to help with this event.
I'd like to extend an open invite to anyone who is interested in getting in on the planning. Please contact me on this forum or call me at 731-415-6563 if you'd like to help. Thanks.

Sorry I couldn't get away. Along with the daughter's birthday party, my wife's sister and her kid were in town for it and stayed the weekend with us. So you can imagine all the free time I had..... "Some circumstances-one of which was a man getting into a buggy at Morning Sun [i.e., Rising Sun], half a mile east of us, and driving off furiously-induced me to anticipate an immediate attack. This man, I subsequently learned, was Col. Porter, of the cotton-burning thieves, who holds a commission in the rebel army." Also found something on the 7th TN Cavalry: "On 30 June, the 7th Tennessee captured a Federal wagon train near Morning Sun in Shelby County, Tennessee." www.tngenweb.org/tipton/misc/gwalton.htm

Nice! Thanks. That first bit I had seen in the OR's, but didn't pay much attention to it at the time. The 7th Tennessee reference is pretty cool.

Mike, if you think you might want to do this one, see if you can get some of the other HardCase interested. Not sure how many, but we may have some who are. Gotta sport the awesome Fed impression. I can't be sure yet if I can make it. But, it sounds kinda cool so far, if it all comes together.
The photo looks great John. I dig it. What does the rest of the property look like on an authenticity level? I haven't been out there in a good long while.

I would hope the Hard Case will come in force, since this event is right in the backyard of several members. The property looks fair. I've talked it over with the people in charge, and think they'll let us make some changes and remove some anachronisms, with provision that it all be put back when the event is over. There's a bit of traffic noise from the interstate. There are some power lines and a couple of security lights on site. We can't do much about this, except maybe get the lights turned off for the event. Most of the cabins have electric lights, but with a little creativity, we should be able to conceal them. There is some equipment on the site from 1920-30 period, but I've already been told there is no problem moving or concealing said equipment. It is my intention to leave the manor house alone, as it transcends the time period. The regular docents at the house will do what they normally do. The other 3 cabins, the commissary, the grist mill shed, and the grounds will be ours to do with as we like, within reason. All in all, I think it's a site that could be spruced up over a couple of weekends before the event goes live. Here's a shot of the Mose Cabin.......... Attachments:

Anybody know where I could get a couple of wagons for this event. I've had a couple of recommendations, but don't want to utilize them if I can help it, as their impressions are farby as shit, and they're gonna want to be included if they lend their wagon.
I really need wagons and/or teams. Help a brotha' out......

Not real sure John. I am under the impression that it costs a good bit of greenbacks to get the two wagon teams in the past that were at events like BGR and IPW.
You may have to present the situation with the local fellas with the wagons that there will be strict guidelines that must be met by emailing a photo of them in their impression prior to the event. It is already quite possible to help many of them along as it is.

So, I guess there would be a limited number of Federals allowed, (the actual number doesn't need to be put out, really). This legitimizes requiring authenticity guidelines to be met and proved prior to the event.

John, shoot me a text Thursday, and we can figure out a time to hash some of this out a little bit more.
